The SubGenius Hour of Slack Podcast
The Church of the SubGenius Weekly Radio Ministry

This marks the first time we have ever posted a show online immediately after recording/broadcasting it WITHOUT LISTENING TO IT. At this posting, Dr. Hal and Rev. Ivan Stang recorded this show three hours earlier at Wisteria Event Center in Southern Ohio using Tarzan's Radio Station, The SubGenius Foundation's compact 3-mic, 2-cd sound mixing and recording system (made from stolen electronics parts, rubber bands, glue and snot). As always, it worked well on a picnic table on the stage of Caffeina's, the semi-outdoor cafe at this fine campground. The weather was a little hot, low 80s, but breezy enough, and the background video projections looked clear and colorful in contrast with sunlight glowing faintly through the huge hand-made Vinyl Dobbshead that we hung next to the impromptu recording studio. For the on-air blabbermouths, if not listeners necessarily, it was a relatively laid-back show rich in Slack.

The world ends tomorrow and you MAY die! We were too busy to mess with a live show, packing the iVan for our final trip to the Wisteria campground to meet the Men from Planet X, so we just played an old mysterious CD labeled "MISC. X-DAY" that turned out to be GREAT! It has about thirty tracks, many of which are themselves composed of thirty tracks. About twenty minutes of it was edited long ago by Pater Nostril, interweaving a sermon by Dr. K'taden Legume with Inadvertent Bulldada of all kinds. See you on the Saucers.

Rev. Stang unexpectedly had to fill in for Dr. Sinister, whose show Radio Synaesthesia usually follows Hour of Slack on WCSB-Cleveland. Failing to grok the station's new "wav cart" machine, Stang made up a Public Service Announcement off the top of his head on a subject with which he's had experience, heart attacks. Playing the score for "Lucifer Rising" in the background, Stang read long stretches from Lonesome Cowboy Dave's novel "Neighborworld" and an even longer stretch from "The Bobliographon" about why suicide is probably a bad idea. Then Stang played some of his own favorite music, just like a regular college radio DJ: "Auld Land Syne" done by Jimi Hendrix at the Filmore East; ESO's version of "Sounds of Silence;" Elvis Costello's "Goon Squad;" "Luck Be a Lady" from Guys and Dolls; "Battle of the Roses" by The Rainmakers, Captain Beefheart's "Trust Us," and finally Herb Alpert doing "Zorba the Greek"! Just like a REAL radio show! Also, we completely forgot to post this episode last week. It was a busy week.

Two really old classic Zappa songs, one new each by The Rudy Schwartz Project, Xposed 4Heads and Phat ManDee, then it's the Dave and Stang yak-off until the show closes with "Iodine 131" by Dave. X-Day is discussed in excruciating detail, and some secrets emerge about the SubGenius documentary project. Sarcastic comments about the coup inexplicably creep into the otherwise straightforward conversation. Straightforward I tell you.

That's our favorite quote by Rev. Argus Faux, who is not in this show! It starts with new music by The Rudy Schwartz Project, Xposed 4Heads, The Psycho Skeletons and Rev. Jimmy Ryan, with two very early Mothers of Invention classics. Then it's live Show with Lonesome Cowboy Dave calling in. We will admit that one thing that makes this episode different from most is that Rev. Stang was a bit tipsy, having come to the show from a memorial service that went a little longer and involved a bit more wine than Rev. Stang is used to. In fact it's the first time in decades that Stang has done a show while under the influence of anything! Dave claimed he thought Stang was unusually lively and organized, but that was an illusion.
