The SubGenius Hour of Slack Podcast
The Church of the SubGenius Weekly Radio Ministry

This is a rerun of #1232 from 2009, recorded mostly at a live devival in Portland, and today the preaching by Portland natives Uncle Dr. Onan Canobite and Rev. Crawford Smith seems strangely timely and even prescient! The blurb then: "We have some GREAT new music (The Attery Squash, SODDI, Mutant Mountain Boys, Kenneth Jonsson, The Duke of Uke, and the grand southern mission of the first thing that came into my bobslack) and some of the best ranting from the Portland Cyclone of Slack devival from last October: Dr. Hal, Rev. Crawford Smith, and Dr. Onan Canobite. There's also a goodly stretch of Radio Synaesthesia, involving Lonesome Cowboy Dave. It's all peppered with wonderful ear-humping collages by LeMur, Phineas Narco, Rev. Sweetness McGee, Rev. Eric, The Large, and Wilhelm Stahlhelm."

We continue with the Virtual X-Day on Zoom from July 1, but it's heavily interspersed with media barrage clips from our early albums and some '90s devivals, and some new music and musical collage from SubG Kids, The Psycho Skeletons, and new contributor Sheridan... and an old song from Danny Elfman's solo album. And a salute to the late Ennio Morricone. Guests on the Zoom "stage" included Dr. Hal, Uncle Onan Canobite, Dr. Philo Drumoond, Rev. Stang, Pissbaptist John Shirley, Modemac, and host Professor Pressure. The internet version is much longer than the radio version, with some SubGenius History as well as a paleontology lesson about a little-known Cretaceous life form called rudists -- which may be of interest to SubG purists, Junior Scientists and collectors but we thought may be too "inside" for broadcast radio. The Internet section also contains some bad news: Lonesome Cowboy Dave is in the hospital with heart problems, and is going to need all the help he can get once they get him back on his feet. Please send fan mail to Dave via stang at subgenius dot com!

We're going to 23X-Day, right in our own homes. The centerpiece is a face-peeling new X-Day rant by the great preacher Father Joe Mama. Much of this episode also samples audio from the first hour of the first day of the first X-Day held entirely online by teleconferencing. Most of X-Day week this roomful of Zoombies was a free-for-all, but we started with this attempt at a traditional "live" X-Hour of Slack limited to mainly Old Radio Doktors: Dr. Hal, Dr. Philo Drummond, Uncle Dr. Onan Canobite, Rev. Ivan Stang and Pissbaptist John Shirley, with Professor Pontius Pressure engineering and hosting. Rev. Modemac later joined in. This is very edited, because everybody could see each other and were constantly referring to greenscreened background visuals or "Show-and-Tell" display of objects -- frustrating to the blind radio audience later. It's interspersed with classic 1980s SubGenius Media Barrage album clips, LeMurian seasoning, The Psycho Skeletons, Danny Elfman "so-lo," and two Doktor songs by the new Dobbs Youth band, SubG Kids. During the teleconference, the conversation turned with surprising frequency to extremely speculative theories about dinosaurs, including Ghost Dinosaurs, Gas-Bag Dinosaurs, and even Moon Dinosaurs.

Friends, the Virtual Online X-Day Drill was lots of fun. The audio recordings are gonna take some editing, though. Luckily, Rev. Susie the Floozie saved our bootaw by doing a SUPERB brand new X-Day and Plague episode of "Bob's Slacktime Funhouse on WREK Atlanta!

Note: Both versions are radio-safe, but the Internet version is 3 minutes longer.

This is the second part of that old recording that's not a rerun, because we never ran it uncut and unmarred. This is as close to the master recording off WCSB Cleveland's cassette deck that we'll get. It was recorded July, 1994, right around X-Day 6. Participants on this ESO Swamp Radio episode were host the late Prof. Chas Smith, Lonesome Cowboy Dave, Princess Wei, and Rev. Ivan Stang.

Speaking of X-Day, we'll be doing a virtual meet-up this week until the Saucers come and take us away. The details will be on subgenius.com if you want to join us on Zoom, starting July 5. We will attempt to record Hours of Slack each afternoon, via teleconference! Starwood festival is also being done that way.
