Stang Sermon at Starwood 2020 -

Starwood Festival is usually like a mini-Woodstock. But in 2020, like so many great weirdo festivals, everything had to happen in the Matrix, with all attendees and presenters looking at each other in little boxes on little screens. But, at least we could hang out! Starwood is the one annual venue where Stang is paid to blabber for an hour straight without fear of interruption -- so he tries harder then. He saves the year's best "Bob" quotes and crazy personal stories for Starwood, and even gets intermittently serious. 2020 was a BAD year, and this is Stang's most earnest pep-talk about that. A highlight is the pinpointing of various predictions "Bob" made back in 1982 and earlier, which were published in THE BOOK OF THE SUBGENIUS, and which in too many cases have suddenly come RELENTLESSLY AND UNCANNILY TRUE, ALL AT ONCE. Stang also gives his testimony on "HOW I INFILTRATED THE PROFA MOVEMENT" and reads some carefully selected important excerpts from Neal Stephenson's recent novel FALL, specifically addressing the coming fallen and dangerous culture of rural rednecks who live 24/7 in tailored realities delivered by their portable devices, via a feedback loop that tracks their eyes, blink intervals, and pulse rates -- in other words, how the Internet now is making dumb people much dumber so quickly. There are also some funny parts.

Remember, there are detailed "lyrics sheets" and logs of show content for each episode on our website in the Radio/HoS area. Just click on a show title for a close look at its innards.

Rerun of Hour of Slack #5 (1985) -- At age 67, Rev. Stang is lately refusing to work as hard on this show as he did thirty five years ago. You listeners should just be danged glad that we still have the master tapes -- well, the dubbing masters, which are on cassette -- and can provide high quality reruns that are probably much better than the same preachers, bands and collagiastics/collagierros can possibly crank out now, in their geezerhood. When we got the radio show on KNON Dallas in '85, we had the ten 90-minute Media Barrage albums we had created, and three years of Puzzling Evidence shows, to work from, along with the then-new contributions from people like Brother Cleve 'Donut' Dunkan. The week this particular episode was assembled, the great spouter Dr. G. Gordon Gordon was in Dallas, and did some co-preaching with Stang in the Bulldada Time Control Labs home studio, which recordings are interspersed with the Puzzling Evidence and Media Barrage clips. Dr. Ahmed Fishmonger's amazing science lecture "THE MUTRON" is included, barely censored. Other contributors included: Dr. Philo Drummond, Dr. Onan Canobite, Rev. Bleepo Abernathy, Stang's kids, Sternodox Keckhaver and Janor Hypercleats, Glen Carlson and Former President Lyndon Baines Johnson, Stefan Hammond, Hellpope Huey, Pope David N. Meyer, Dr. Hal, Gary G'Broagfran, Mark Mothersbaugh, St. Byron Werner

(REVISED Sept.21) FIRED! The West is fired. The East is drowned. TIME FOR A PARTY IN THE MIDWEST! -- before the rattlesnake-nadoes, anti-masker water riots and burning cactuspus storms beset EVEN US, the Savage Mind of the Country's Interior (as per PuzEv). Sheridan retells the story of Adam and Eve. Onan publishes a SubGenius newspaper which Stang reads. And there are AT LEAST THREE SONGS ABOUT THE WORLD BURNING, ranging from classic masterpiece to bulldada doktor. Noisemakers include Cult of Zir, Soma for Savages, Rev. Negative, and "TNN" (Dr. Faux involved). Towards the end are two epic ancient tracks! One is Rev. Slanderbob's 2010 remix (adding music) of a pretty blistering and energetic devival sermon rant preached (in the 1990s?) somewhere by Rev. Stang before he lucked into Slack and got old and calmed down considerably. The other is an operatic instrumental tour-de-force by The Rudy Schwartz Project called "Buncombe Doubly Damned" from the album Delicious Ass Frenzy. (Trivia note: Stang is excitedly editing a music video using insect wildlife and goat ranch footage to illustrate this RSP composition -- which grotesquely tips its ridiculously ungainly hat to the incredible "Spaghetti Western" scores composed by by the late Ennio Morricone.)

This is not exactly a rerun, but it was recorded on Halloween night of 1985. The great SubGenius ranter and assassin G. Gordon Gordon was in town from Bolivia, and we'd been invited to Karen Denard's popular nightly talk show on the Dallas NPR station, KERA. Pastor Buck Naked was also there. This would have been Hour of Slack #4, but, it was a competing station's show so we waited almost three years and then played it in small bits and pieces over several Hours of Slack, around show #150. So this is the first time it's ever been played in its whole one-hour form on Hour of Slack. Many of the callers were Dallas SubGenii, pretending to be new to it. The callers, Buck Naked and GGG were all in very fine form that night, and the host was super cool. Proof that David Letterman's producers shouldn't have been too chickenshit to have us on his show.

The Internet version is "clean," but has a lot of news tacked onto the end, plus some cool Swinging Love Corpses music.

RADIO SAFE VERSION - Much more music than usual in this episode! You may have heard of some of the bands... Oingo Boingo is the only "logo band," though. We have Cult of Zir, Rubix Pube, After Hours, SubG Kids, Thunk!, and TTN (Dr. Argus Faux & friends), plus some skeletons who are psychotic. Spoken and/or ranted word comes from Sheridan (new), ESO Swamp Radio (old) and Napoleon Hill (REALLY old).
