The SubGenius Hour of Slack Podcast
The Church of the SubGenius Weekly Radio Ministry

Most of this episode is from 1993, and therefore wonderfully old school. Puzzling Evidence, The Swingin' Love Corpses, Radio Shorts, Phineas Narco, Dr. Howll, The Rudy Schwartz Project, Zoogz Rift, Nenslo's Bobbie Hating Rant read by Stang, Drs. 4 "Bob," Church of New Faith, Jay Condom, Rev. Susie the Floozy on Connie, The Sterrills, ESO Radio with Bishop Joey from the First Church of the Last Laugh, and much much more unmoored. ALL RADIO SAFE.

RADIO SAFE VERSION! What are the holidays without Slack and reruns? Sappy, nostalgia-provoking reruns on TV are what Christmas is all about, right? Plus, it gives us a break. This is the hoary old annual traditional Xmas Re-Rerun of #867 (and 921 and 1026, 1077, 1129, 1236, 1338, 1497, 1549, 1602, 1654, 1705, 1758, 1810 etc.), which was itself a condensation of some ancient year's 3-show "Best of Xmas Sickness" compilation, which were themselves the concentrated best-of from 15 years' worth of previous Xmas SubGenius and other Xmas weirdo collections, going back to the show's beginning in 1985 at KNON, Dallas. Includes over 66 separate tracks/songs/bits! And no, not one bit has been changed in all these years. Now that's Slack!

One COULD say that every SubGenius radio show was a spin-off from another SubGenius radio show, in a kind of endless Uroborus circle jerk. If Rev. Susie the Floozie's "Bob's" Slack Time Funhouse spun off Hour of Slack (which was preceeded by The Puzzling Evidence Show), The Lymph Node Institute was by far the best of several Funhouse spin-offs. This example proves it. Prepare to use your brain in a new, albeit not NECESSARILY better, way. Probably better. The music and ranting between songs -- just perfect! (RADIO SAFE)

We'll do fresh shows again someday. This thousand-episode-old show is probably better, though. This one has a little of everything plus a couple of amazingly well done "Bob" hymns that haven't been heard in a long time, and two (!) classic sermons by Father Joe Mama. Lots of ESO Swamp Radio with Chas, Dave, Stang and Wei, The Swingin' Love Corpses, Zoogz Rift, Little Fyodor, The Pink Boyz, and some old-timey Stang ranting. Stang, incidentally, is not dead, just taking it real easy for a change.

A rerun of a rerun of a rerun! We must wonder how deep they'll eventually go, drilling into the past -- perhaps to avoid an uncertain future? Or just to reanimate greatness long thought extinct, like the recreation of mammoths from frozen DNA? Perhaps an even more pertinent question: who cares?

HoS #447 (rerun as #859 in 2002) was a 1994 compilation of some of the best bits from the 1991 Hour of Slack and KPFA shows regarding the Gulf War, with some things that came later, especially a collage video by Patriris. A highlight is the Kyle Kossup song, "America Feels Good About Itself." Some 2002 live ESO radio on the then-current War Thing fills it out.

It is uncanny how perfectly appropriate the January 1991 Gulf War material sounded in October 2002 and now sounds in 2021.

Great Preachin' (rerun of #857) -- TIME TRAVEL IS POSSIBLE! For instance, Rev. Stang practices extreme Time Control to buy himself extra Life Time by exposing new audiences to these classic recordings, rather than breaking his back further by sweating over a hot hot-splicer (or digital editing system, as the case may be). This way, the new generation of adults -- that is, people the age of Stang and Co.'s great-great-grandchildren -- are privileged to hear the kind of wisdom of the ancients that is normally prohibited now. Don't believe us? JUST WAIT ANOTHER 20 YEARS and you'll see: everything in so-called "current events" and "the news" repeats itself! -- just a little worse each time.

Back in them days of 2002 A.D., when our spines were stout and strong and straight, there were so many audio contributions coming in from so many artists, and so many subjects covered on the various other SubGenius-related shows (especially WCSB's ESO Swamp Radio) that we were making 'theme' shows. The most common subjects were "Bob," the Conspiracy, whatever war was going on at the time, aliens, apocalypses, and, of course, sex. That's what this is; but "love" sounded more atypical for Hour of Slack. Music includes Consortium of Genius, ESO,n The Swingin' Love Corpses, Elvis Presley, The El Queso All-Stars, the Broadway cast of "Guys n' Dolls," StAllio, Heart Ignition, The Bran Flakes, Mark Mothersbaugh, and The Rainmakers. LeMur collages collide with the listener's inner brain. It's radio-safe.

The pattern (and Stang's spinal therapy) continues with another THOUSAND-SHOW-OLD SHOW! YET AGAIN, AGAIN! #1854 is really #854, rerun from 2002. In those days, when we had a lot of new material, we broke it up into "themes" just as an arbitrary way of organizing the mass of sound files. The theme in this case developed when Dr. Philo Drummond unearthed some old tapes of The Pink Boyz, the rock band headed by the late Dr. X, a brief and early co-sub-founder of the Church. Dr. X, Stang's best pal in high school, died young of drugs -- mostly alcohol. Luckily the depressing nature of the alcoholism theme is offset by the inanity of the counterbalancing psychedelics theme. There's some excellent ESO Swamp Radio ranting, LeMurian collage, and music by Consortium of Genius, Dr. Onan's Wotan Band, The Pink Boyz, The Rainmakers, Reagan's Polyp, Kim Fowley, and Rocko Schwab.

YET AGAIN! This episode #1853 is really #853, which, being from 2002, is ONE THOUSAND SHOWS OLD! And yet the news it carries could have been ripped from tomorrow's headlines. It's all RADIO SAFE also. This was the first of many shows which HEAVILY utilized the audio cut-ups of Fernandinande LeMur. We'd been using 'em all along, but he'd been on such a tear that we organized the next 3 shows around his contributions. (854 would be "Drugs and Drunks" and 855 would be "Love").

RERUN AGAIN! This episode #1851 is really #851. At the end of last week's rerun it promised this DEVO SubGenius special, and by golly, that makes sense, because, WHY NOT? Maybe next week's #1852 will be a rerun of #852 and we'll just stick with that pattern until Rev. Stang gets a little faster at his renewed physical therapy exercises. (He shouldn't have stopped doing those stretches for his bad back.)
This one's from August 2002. DEVO fans will be thrilled at the cover versions of beloved classics, especially the five by Occupant (Rev. Dr. Uncle Onan Canobite and "MITCH").

RADIO SAFE. Some of our Media Barrage albums from the early 1980s are on CD or streaming, but Media Barrage #4, "The End of the World," stayed on tape since 1981. When this album was edited on reel to reel tape, largely by Stang, there were few known SubGeniuses, and Stang and Drummond were new to radio. Mixed with the old material are three original songs by Bo Burnham, David Morrison and a collaboration by Rev. Negative and the late great Rev. Just John. So, have a swim in the toxic radioactive swamp that is our future as prophesied in SubGenius Media Barrage Tape #4.

When the Church outreach was first being developed under "Bob," there were originally three mortals involved: Ivan Stang, Dr. Philo Drummond, and the late "Dr. X," aka Deacon Lamont Duvoe, aka Monte Dhooge, lead singer and songwriter of his band The Pink Boyz. We recently had cause to unearth Monte's early SubGenius preaching and Pink Boyz recordings, and realized it was high time for a Dr. X tribute. His preaching was used a lot on our old Media Barrage 4 album (which was never released on CD, just on cassette, decades ago) and parts of that are woven in and around the Pink Boyz songs. There are many choice slips of INSANE Dallas Christian radio preachers too. Almost all of this dates from 1978 to 1980.

Like last week, three different shows are interspersed: The Too Late Show from the wee hours of July 5, a live Hour of Slack with Stang, Dr. Hal and Papa Joe Mama from July 4 (also recorded at Land of Id Resort in Florida), and a phone-in from Lonesome Cowboy Dave recorded at Tarzan's on Stang Ranch. The Too Late Show was hosted by Rev. Fidd Chewley and features an interview with Rev. Purge, an actual adult film star, who answer's Fidd's lascivious questions about the behind-the-scenes details of her work. Music is by Rubix Pube, The Rudy Schwartz Project, and the very last song is by Ego Plum (although we didn't learn that until after the show was finished.) LeMur did the titles, news and weird short cut-ins.

RADIO SAFE - The day before X-Day, or so we thought, Dr. Hal, Stang, Peas, and (later) Papa Joe Mama did one final live "Hour of Slack" from the stage at Land of Id resort in Land o' Lakes, Florida. It's quite the nerd-out! To prevent an outbreak of nerdophrenia in listeners, the elevated man-blabber is punctuated by rockin' doktor songs by Rubix Pube -- not the live recordings from X-Day, but their studio albums Hypnostank and BobComp 1 (available on bandcamp.com). The wonderful girl-voice of Rev. Lochness Cleaver serves as a needed respite from the yabbering grandpas.

Lonesome Cowboy Dave is back in the house! We recorded a phone-in to Tarzan's Radio Station at Fossil House on Stang Ranch in Stangsville, Texas on 2021-08-09, and none of us had died yet... although according to the news, the world might end before you get a chance to hear this show all the way to the end. But, what better way to spend your time just before the atmosphere either freezes entirely, or boils away? (... Depending on your location.) Three classic songs by Dave and ESO are included, plus live versions of two of them at the end! Good luck living through the Weather Apocalypse that long. (Note: Apologies to Larry Blamire for the title. Correction: The movie GASLIGHT is actually from 1944.)

RADIO SAFE VERSION! Daring songs by The Rudy Schwartz Project and The Swinging Love Corpses bracket a pretty lively "Live Hour of Slack" on July 4, the day before X-Day at what sadly turned out to be the 26th X-Day Drill. "Panelists" include Dr. Hal, Rev. Stang, Rev. Peas and Rev. Fidd Chewley, not necessarily in that order. Topics include... well, let's not get into all that. More detailed logs are on subgenius.com.

(ALL RADIO SAFE) Friends, this episode, recorded live at 24X-Day at Land of Id in Land o' Lakes Florida, with special guests Dr. Hal and Papa Joe Mama, may be a bit of a challenge for the listener because the recording quality was affected by seriously loud torrential rains, and, though we were under a roof, we were outside in it. This recording took some SERIOUS filtering with the Levelator to be comprehensible, and Dr. Hal especially was horribly overmodulated, but, I think it's worth it. The Woker Than Thou will face The Judgment. Unfortunately, the Judgmental will also face the Judgment.

RADIO SAFE VERSION. It's a different campground, in a completely different part of the country, with a slightly different audience, but it's still another early July X-Day Drill live show with Dr. Hal and Rev. Stang. There are about 20 years' worth of those in the can. Luckily, this one is spiced up by Father Joe Mama's grippingly unforgettable first sermon at 24X-Day, a reveal of Wizard Bong the mysterious document, a little more SWONK comics and Dobbstown Mirror readings, and the romantic Rudy Schwartz Project song, "Farley Granger's Oxygen Tent."

The 24X-Day board recordings weren't lost after all! However, we're just beginning to sort through them. Meanwhile, here are reports on the Drill both real and fake, pieced together from fragments, lies, comic books, and The Dobbstown Mirror, with Stang doing a lot of reading. (One of the comic books being read is SWONK.) We also unearthed some nice Norel Pref collages to punctuate the various readings, bleedings and seedings. Music includes The Swinging Love Corpses, The Rudy Schwartz Project, Cyberchump, and monster movie soundtracks.

RADIO SAFE VERSION. The 26th X-Day Drill, previously called 24 X-Day, was a great reminder that maybe we'd better either start working on our own escape ships, or clean up the one we're already on. We're still rounding up recordings -- some may have been lost to Tropical Storm Elsa! -- but we have some early excerpts including a fantastic, sick Papa Joe Mama sermon and some killer music by Rubix Pube. There's also some terrible music by Fidd Chewley and Rev. Peas, and a wonderful 12-minute media barrage by R.A.T.H.O.L.E. The Rudy Schwartz Project and some truly puzzling Evidence round it out. Stang gives thanks in an impromptu rant inspired by the real-life invasion of the resort by walking catfish.

Rerun of #1258. X-Day XIII was coming up -- Lucky 13. Since X-Day Drill #12 in 2009, your host and prayer partner had been collecting and setting aside all the parts of OTHER folks' shows when X-Day was being discussed. Includes: Stang on the British podcast RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE SITTING NOW and Jack Jett's show on Rational Radio in Dallas; Rev. Susie the Floozie's "Bob's" Slacktime Fun House with Puzzling Evidence as a guest; The Puzzling Evidence Show with Dr. Hal, Phineas Narco and Dr. Philo Drummond; there's also a poem by Nenslo, read by Dr. Hal at 12X-Day. The real killer however is Papa Joe Mama's sermon from the 2002 (or 2003?) devival in Hamburg, Germany, entitled, "Five Minutes To Midnight"! Also featured are frequent caller Bernard, The Crazy Numbers Guy, and Paula Dupree, the Ape Woman. Actually it is her mad doctor, John Carradine, doing the talking. Paula herself did not speak until the second Ape Woman movie.

RADIO SAFE! And it's a rerun, a real oldie. Hour of Slack #535, 1996. It's WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON X-DAY, in excruciating detail. It features what may well be the most forceful (and informative!) rants ever delivered by both Rev. Ivan Stang and Dr. K'taden Legume, sermons recorded in moments when those worthies were totally caught up in the thrall of "Bob" -- divine messengers, as it were, helpless to do anything but preach the hardest truths of SubGenius Orthodox Dobbsian doctrine. Punctuating these heart-staking sermons are some of the most intensive so-called "Media Barrage tapes" from the 1980s, especially segments from St. Byron Werner's historic cassette collage masterpieces "Space Age Bachelor Pad" (the actual origin of that hipster genre catch-phrase) and "Dougs, Drugs and Doctors." Voices heard from the old SubGenius Media Barrage tapes include Dr. Philo Drummond, Hellswami Satellite Weavers (the great SubGenius "ur-illustrator" narrating into a tape deck on a drive through Meteor Crater, Arizona), Former Pastor Buck Naked, Dobbs' bodyguard Dr. G. Gordon Gordon, Pope Michael Flores and even Janor, back in the olden days. We should have been running this episode annually, and would do so henceforth, were not X-Day imminently nigh.

RADIO SAFE! But perhaps as evil as it is good. The mysterious Cleveland artist that calls itself SHERIDAN has provided yet more Show fodder, and it comes at a good time as we are preparing to leave the planet, for good this time. This is a true media barrage, a little of everything that you mostly have never heard before, or heard so long ago -- like at the age of six or seven -- that you still remember it vaguely. Sheridan also does his disturbed radio DJ bit some. "Station WWYN" he calls it. So, strap your headphones or hearing aids on tight!

New Rudy Schwartz Project songs including "Intelligent Design" and "Adjacent to the Latex Gerbil" from the album of the same evocative name! The music is all new and the yakkery is all old Puzzling Evidence from KPFA Berekeley with Philo, Hal and Puzzling, and Don Joyce, and from WCSB Cleveland, with Lonecow Dave, Chas Smith, Dr. Hal and Dr. Sinister. There are some excellent collages by LeMur and Lymph Node Institute. The Swinging Love Corpses play their best song. Rev. J. Cobblestone offers a brand new Dobbs hymn, and Rev. Squalis Friday returns.

"The Larger World," a new Bob Walkenhorst song; Stang reads Goldstein's book from 1984; and Wei and Stang sing a salute to Dr. G. Gordon Gordon that they mutilated from a Warren Zevon classic.

We saved those bits for this show, which ties in with Stang's SubGenius History / Cult Management online course that was then at Maybe Logic Academy (maybelogic.net). Ironically, brand new mindfuckery ends the show. Show is RADIO SAFE.

This one's not EXACTLY a rerun. It's partly made from episode #139, in which Dr. G. Gordon Gordon gets Stang hooked on Human Soul. There's also some old ranting by Stang from stuff he wrote for the Stark Fist of Removal magazine, and an an exclusive interview with The Swingin' Love Corpses about their drug use. We also hear clips from Sad Dog Diary, by Ze Frank, found on YouTube, and LBJ explaining that "Dogs has always been mah friend." Stang reads from Dobbstown Mirror and also Onan's Sermon on Brains.

((RADIO SAFE VERSION)) This episode is different because it’s so CHEERY. Don’t worry, it’s still sick and twisted; it’s just that moods improved at Stang Ranch with the improved weather, vaccines, and animal behavior. Also, the new Dobbstown Mirror came out, and that’s always cause for celebration and on-air readings. The music in this one is a real mix, with everything from old show tunes to old-school rock and roll to punk to Doktormusic and The Swinging’ Love Corpses — but all cheery or at least spazzy and funny. The Drummond Brothers are featured on Puzzling Evidence clips as well as the Corpses tunes. Old ESO Radio and even older Firesign Theatre are interspersed. Stang reveals the plans for X-Day 2021 at the end.

Some listeners may want to use ear protection. Most of this episode is straight out of Cleveland. The bulk of it is by Sheridan, the mysterious weirdo, who provided another massive 45-minute media barrage. At the end we hear a classic tune from Cleveland's Einstein Secret Orchestra, and some acid garage punk jazz by The Swingin' Love Corpses.

This episode is NOTHING AT ALL like any recent episodes, or any old ones for that matter. It's almost entirely created by the Cleveland weirdo SHERIDAN, albeit using lots of SubGenius clips amid inexplicable things from his own collection. He wanted to give Stang a break so he did two almost-whole shows, of which is this the first. There is a break in the middle for rare, just-unearthed songs by Nenslo and The Swingin' Love Corpses.  ((CLEAN FOR RADIO!)

This episode is exactly like the last three, in that it has the same elements: ESO Swamp Radio from 2001, Puzzling Evidence from 2012, ancient rare Firesign Theatre, and Captain Beefheart. Saves time. Allowed us to get the Kindle version of our new book EYELASH out. We start with the late Prof. Chas Smith explaining the origins of Lonesome Cowboy Dave. Later there is an all-star Puzzling Evidence show, and more ESO, with call-ins from superstars Rev. Bleepo Abernathy, Michael Peppe, Popess Lilith, Bishop Joey of Church of the Last Laugh, and Dr. Phineas Narco of National Cynical... but not Dr. Hal. Towards the end, Philo Drummond and Ivan Stang revert to their true identities as Arkansas hog farmers.

((CLEAN FOR RADIO)) "Nobody's biography has a happy ending!" -- the late Dr. K'taden Legume

This one's heavy on the Puzzling Evidence, an unusual episode from 2012 without Dr. Hal but with Rev. Stang and Dr. Philo Drummond. Rev. Phineas Narco joins by phone. Also: ESO Swamp Radio in the muddy, muddy flesh, The Firesign Theatre from Dope Humor of the Seventies, The Rudy Schwartz Project's Sunshine Supershits, Captain Beefheart, The Psycho Skeletons and Tenacious D. Those were the days. The days of old. Of old people and old Puzzling Evidence tapes.

All the rest of this episode is taken from The SubGenius Foundation's 2001 collection of best clips from ESO Swamp Radio (WCSB-Cleveland), the great show of the late Chas Smith, on which Lonesome Cowboy Dave, Stang, Princess Wei and Bleepo Abernathy were honored to be regulars. If regulars is the correct term. Probably not.

Or is it the lighter side of The Dark? Either way, this is another SubGenius "Silver Age" collection, although there's a brand new rant-song by new contributor Rev. Trevor B. (No relation.) Killer rare clips from The Firesign Theatre, Puzzling Evidence, ESO Swamp Radio,  and the SubGenius documentary movie (which is now free on Amazon Prime and YouTube). The Wei-Stang Clan was hoping to do a new "live" show this week, but two abandoned puppy dogs suddenly showed up on our doorstep, and they've been keeping everybody extra busy with their funny cavorting and pooping. The boy pup is named Yeti and the girl pup is Chupacabra. We think they are mostly German Shepherd so we reckon they will be large. The cats, however, are NOT amused. ((Whole show is CLEAN for radio.))

RADIO SAFE VERSION: Old shows and music that sound brand new... in fact, some sound more like they're from the future! Music by ESO, The El Queso All-Stars, Morgan Gutentag, The SubG Kids, Rev. Bleepo Abernathy, and The Psycho Skeletons. Words are emitted, rapid-fire, by The Puzzling Evidence Show, ESO Swamp Radio, Sheridan, Rev. Negative, Christopher Lee the movie actor, and The Firesign Theatre. LeMur works over John Wayne! Yes, it is a show. A SubGenius show.

RADIO SAFE VERSION - Stang reads from the new SubGenius book EYELASH, the latest Dobbs.town Mirror, and from recent rant-liners by Rev. Elvis Martini. From the SubGenius documentary, we hear audio describing the Church's biggest early devival, and the first super-obnoxious SubGenius Kook of many. The Firesign Theatre rarities continue, along with classic "lost" ESO Swamp Radio and Puzzling Evidence clips. Contributors include Dr. Philo Drummond, Paul Mavrides, Richard Linklater, Puzzling Evidence, Rev. Penn Jillette, Dr. Hal, Rev. Kelly Cash, Dr. Legume, Lonesome Cowboy Dave and Nurse Vicky.

Stang sings (?) a little January 20 ditty at the beginning of this Internet version that's not on the Radio version. Stang also reads from the new SubGenius book EYELASH, the latest Dobbs.town Mirror, and from recent rant-liners by Rev. Elvis Martini. The first full-length SubGenius science fiction novel, EYELASH by Nikolai Kingsley, is now available, and Rev. Stang reads an excerpt from it. He also reads the latest Dobbs.town Mirror (in stages) as well as a new rant by Onan. Interspersed are classic best-of bits from The Puzzling Evidence Show and ESO Swamp Radio (all from 2001-2002) and some more very rare Firesign Theatre from their early radio days. We also hear Paul Mavrides and Penn Jillette talking about the Church, from the new documentary. There’s one song, a hidden track by Morgan Gutentag, titled, “Hidden Track.” Everything else is gravy, or, LeMur. (INTERNET VERSION = RADIO SAFE)

RADIO SAFE VERSION -

The only new thing in this episode is a clip about the history of The Book of the SubGenius from Sandy Boone's new movie. Stang mispronounces Nick Offerman's name in the credits but that's understandable since Stang is very, very old now -- as are these amazing best-of selections from The Puzzling Evidence Show, ESO Swamp Radio/Hour of Slack (both from 2001-2002), and unbelievable rare clips from The Firesign Theatre's recent release of their earliest radio work, a collection called Dope Humor of the Seventies. This kind of show is easier for Stang to assemble as he heals up from doing something stupid to his own backbones. And it's much more fun than just using reruns.
